Evidence-Based Practice Change Assignment
Evidence-Based Practice Change Assignment
Post a draft of your PICOT question. This should be the same question you are using in your research paper. Give and receive feedback to refine your PICOT question.
Review your problem or issue and the study materials to formulate a PICOT (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome and Time) question for your capstone project change proposal. A PICOT question starts with a designated patient population in a particular clinical area and identifies clinical problems or issues that arise from clinical care. The intervention used to address the problem must be a nursing practice intervention. Include a comparison of the nursing intervention to a patient population not currently receiving the nursing intervention, and specify the timeframe needed to implement the change process. Formulate a PICOT question using the PICOT format (provided in the assigned readings) that addresses the clinical nursing problem. Evidence-Based Practice Change Assignment

The PICOT question will provide a framework for your capstone project change proposal.
In a paper of 500-750 words, clearly identify the clinical problem and how it can result in a positive patient outcome.
Step 1: Create PICOT question; A PICOT question is presented and provides a clear framework for the capstone project change proposal. Your PICOT question should clearly outline all of these elements: patient, intervention, comparison, outcome and time.
Step 2: PICOT Problem: Identify the PICOT problem, what clinical problems or issues may arise from clinical care? The PICOT problem as it relates to evidence-based solution, nursing intervention, patent care, health care agency, and nursing practice is thoroughly described.
Step 3: Describe nursing intervention: A nursing intervention used to address the problem. Compare the nursing intervention to a patient population not currently receiving the nursing intervention, and timeframe needed to implement the change process.
Step 4: Summarize Clinical Problem and Patient Outcome: The clinical problem and how it can result in a positive patient outcome. Evidence-Based Practice Change Assignment
PICOT Question
According to Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2019), asking a clinical question in the PICOT format is the first step in evidence-based practice change and helps provide a framework for a literature search. The PICOT question for this capstone project change proposal is: Among nursing students (P), does simulation during classroom teaching (I) compared to no simulation (C) impact students’ learning outcomes (O) within nine months (T)? Evidence-Based Practice Change Assignment
PICOT Problem
The current capstone project seeks to bridge knowledge and practice gaps among nursing students to acquire sufficient skills from classroom teaching. The PICOT problem to be solved in the current capstone project change is inadequate skills among nursing students compared to their expected levels of competence. The problem, coupled with the diminishing sites for clinical placement for student nurses, might persist if classroom educational strategies do not promote the assimilation of knowledge. For the current change project, the nurse educator noted that nursing students at different levels of their studies and even some after graduating lack sufficient skills for the several nursing interventions and procedures, which they are expected to perform easily. A review of the current classroom teaching strategies or instructional strategies found that nurse educators do not create an environment that mimics experiences or situations and the personal roles of nursing students in the actual performance of tasks. Thus, the problem of insufficient nursing skills is a serious one that needs to be addressed. Evidence-Based Practice Change Assignment
Farokhzadian et al. (2018) state that the lack of sufficient skills and knowledge threatens the delivery of safe and quality patient care. The PICOT problem relates to the evidence-based solution of adopting simulation because there is a need to promote concept assimilation through experiential learning. The problem also relates to the nursing intervention of simulation in nursing education because it will improve how nurse educators impart knowledge and skills to nursing students. It is expected that the acquisition of more competence through learning by doing as envisioned by simulation in the nursing classroom will improve patient care offered by nursing grandaunts from our nursing college.
Nursing Intervention
The nursing intervention proposed in this capstone change project proposal is the adoption of simulation in classroom teaching. According to Aebersold (2018), simulation involves computerized mannequins, role play, virtual simulation, and video games, among other approaches. Simulation helps students learn skills and improve clinical decision-making and competence in providing safe care to patient populations. One way the intervention will help solve this problem is by helping nursing students develop clinical expertise and reasoning that promotes competence in clinical decision-making. Students will learn to provide quality patient care because they can connect knowledge learned in class with practical experiences or situations. The simulation will also help them learn how to intervene and manage health care situations. Evidence-Based Practice Change Assignment
However, a student population that is taught under traditional skills laboratory or educational strategies without simulation does not access replication of realism provided by simulation approaches. Besides, those who do not learn through simulation cannot experience the replacement and amplification of real situations interactively as provided by simulation (French, 2020). The current change project seeks to address the problem within nine months of implementing the intervention. It is expected that within nine months of simulation in classroom education, nursing students will progress from gaining knowledge to being competent in applying it in clinical situations. Also, nurse educators will witness increased skills development among the learners and improved learning outcomes.
Summary of Clinical Problem and Patient Outcome
Today’s nursing students are being taught in a more hands-on environment than in the past. However, there is still a lack of simulation in nursing classroom teaching. This can result in clinical problems for nurses. Failure to adopt simulation can lead to a lack of understanding of how the body works. This can result in ineffective care and poor patient outcomes. Insufficient nursing skills can lead to nurses not understanding how their patients feel. Some may also not understand how to provide the best care for their patients, resulting in poor patient outcomes, such as increased infection rates and complications. Evidence-Based Practice Change Assignment
However, with the implementation of the solution, nurses will understand how the body works to provide the best possible care for their patients. By using simulation nursing classroom using simulation in their classroom learning, nurses will be able to gain the necessary skills needed to provide quality care for their patients. Such skills include clinical reasoning, decision-making, and appropriate intervention to manage patient populations. Improved patient outcomes are sure to follow.
