Patient Safety And Quality Care Discussion Paper

In the article “Managing to Improve Quality: The Relationship Between Accreditation Standards, Safety Practices, and Patient Outcomes,” the authors discuss the growing trend by medical insurance companies to eliminate reimbursement for Never Events. As these types of mistakes should be easily preventable, hospitals have developed protocols to lessen or extinguish the occurrence of these events. In addition, The Joint Commission (TJC) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have developed core measures to guide health care providers’ efforts in improving patient safety and the quality of care delivered. Health care organizations have developed strategic agendas to help meet these standards and reduce the incidence of Never Events. In addition, nurses significantly influence the overall quality of health care and play a pivotal role in improving patient outcomes.

For this Discussion, you will consider the standards in place for nurses and how they can improve the quality of care.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review the information at the Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services websites on the core measures and standards presented in this week’s Resources.
Consider the nurse’s role in supporting the organization’s strategic plan to improve clinical outcomes.
Conduct an Internet search for either a Never Event or a core measure and select one to address in your post.
By Day 3
Respond to the following:

How has the emphasis on quality of care, patient safety, and clinical care outcomes been impacted by specific standards emanating from TJC and CMS? Cite your selected core measure or Never Event in your response.
What is the impact of the nurse’s role on clinical outcomes for the organization?
Discuss nurse-specific challenges in influencing change in quality improvement.
How does this influence the ability of the organization to achieve its strategic plan? Patient Safety And Quality Care Discussion Paper
Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature.

Note Initial Post: A 3-paragraph (at least 350 words) response. Be sure to use evidence from the readings and include in-text citations. Utilize essay-level writing practice and skills, including transitional material and organizational frames. Avoid quotes; paraphrase to incorporate evidence into your writing. A reference list is required. Use the most current evidence (usually ≤ 5 years)Patient Safety And Quality Care Discussion Paper

Promoting Safety and Quality

Patient safety and quality care are vital aspects of any healthcare organization to prevent the occurrence of never events.  The Joint Commission (JSC) and the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMM) help set standards that act as the basis for objective evaluation to measure, assess, and improve performance to ensure quality patient outcomes. The set standards are usually reasonable, achievable, and surveyable; hence easy to monitor and evaluate based on the quality of care and patient outcomes (The Joint Commission, 2020). The standards reduce variation, achieving predictable results and improving patient outcomes, healthcare systems, and organizational goals. An example of a never event that these standards seek to address is a surgical event, such as the performance of a surgical procedure on the wrong patient (Patient Safety Networks, 2019)Patient Safety And Quality Care Discussion Paper. This event can cause severe injury or death to the patient and may result in increased costs to the Medicare program and the patient in an attempt to reverse the consequences of the error. Patient identification standards have been implemented to curb this error, improving patient care.

Nurses play a critical role in improving the clinical outcomes in an organization. They are involved in all aspects of hospital quality, including direct patient care, medication management, data collection and reporting, among many others. The application of evidence-based practice in nursing care has improved patient outcomes, decreasing the demand for healthcare resources and reducing the organization’s expenses (Young & Smith, 2022)Patient Safety And Quality Care Discussion Paper. As a result, nurses can help patients recover from severe illnesses with minimum resources by offering compassionate, patient-centered care.

However, nurses face many challenges in quality improvement—for instance, the scarcity of nurses in major hospitals results in inadequate nursing resources in key activities such as quality improvement. As a result, nurses will focus on areas of patient care and neglect some vital quality improvement activities. In addition, confronting traditional nursing education does not always prepare nurses for their evolving role in today’s healthcare setting. This significantly increases the incidences of change resistance, making it difficult to implement quality improvement strategies (Barredo, 2017)Patient Safety And Quality Care Discussion Paper. Nurses also face a significantly high administrative burden in quality improvement activities, spending too much time on data collection and analysis, with less time to develop and implement strategies. With these challenges, it becomes difficult for organizations to implement their strategic action plans as they will require more resources and staffing, which may not be readily available.
