Introduction

Childhood obesity is a serious healthcare issue affecting many children globally with greater prevalence among school going children. This condition puts the affected children at a higher risk of developing complicated and severe live threatening conditions later in life including depression, diabetes, anxiety and hypertension (Zhou, Urso & Jadeja, 2020). Obesity among school going children has led to poor outcomes including but not limited to poor academic performance. childhood obesity is defined as a condition when the weight of a child exceeds that which is medically fit for his or her age. There are many factors that contribute to the development of obesity among children but children are not aware of the risk factors hence, parents and guardians must take responsibility to ensure that children are free from obesity. some common factors that may lead to obesity include genetic factors, poor eating habits and lack of physical exercises. Also, the risk of developing obesity in adulthood increases among children with obesity. The negative impacts of childhood obesity therefore are the major reasons why appropriate measures must be implemented to prevent the condition. The PICOT question for this assignment is; Among school going children does the use of community recreation activities and educational programs on lifestyle changes compared to no intervention reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity? Background of Studies

The two articles, Korn et al., (2018) and Ganle, Boakye & Baatiema, (2019) emphasizes on the causes and strategies that can be implemented to overcome childhood obesity at the community level. For instance, Ganle, Boakye & Baatiema, (2019) states that a high frequency of consuming fizzy drinks as well as higher parental education were among the main causes of childhood obesity. In addition, the authors stated that regular exercises and proper sleeping for at least 8 hours a day will help in reducing the risk of childhood obesity. The article therefore highlights the need to implement appropriate community based interventions that include promotion of healthy diet, physical activity as well as adherence to a healthy lifestyle. In addition, Korn et al., (2018) stated that community based interventions are effective in combating childhood obesity at the population level in that the whole community is exposed to appropriate policies, programs and environment thereby reducing the incidences of childhood obesity. the research question guiding this paper is, does community base interventions help in reducing childhood obesity at the community level The Risk Of Childhood Obesity Research Paper.

How Do These Two Articles Support the Nursing Practice Problem You Chose?

These articles can be used to support the nursing practice chosen in that they have a direct link with the PICOT question. For instance, Korn et al., (2018) strives to understand how stakeholders’ leadership roles in influencing community interventions aimed at reducing childhood obesity. Understanding the role of stakeholders in reducing the prevalence of childhood obesity is essential because it will help in identification and implementation of community based strategies to reduce obesity among school going children. Some the community-based interventions that are viable in preventing childhood obesity including stakeholder education which include educating parents and guardians on appropriate diet selection to prevent obesity.

In addition, the introduction of community based physical exercises which can be done in groups is also essential in preventing childhood obesity. Ganle, Boakye & Baatiema, (2019) on the other hand established that high level of education among parents increased the prevalence of childhood obesity in that most educated parents had a higher purchasing power leading to the consumption of unhealthy foods, a sedentary lifestyle that include having a car for transport among others. The findings of this study can therefore be used to initiate appropriate community based interventions such as parental education to prevent childhood obesity.

Method of Studies

The first article by Korn et al., (2018) utilized three methodologies in three phases of the project. The three methodologies include online surveys, retrospective study as well as a survey modification. The main methodology was a survey which is a research methodology involving the sampling of specific units from a population and administering other data collection techniques on that sample. A survey involves the asking of many questions to a predefined sample to increase the response rate as well as the amount of data collected. Survey as a research methodology has both advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage is that surveys have a large population and therefore a greater statistical power. The disadvantage however is that some participants may not feel encouraged to provide accurate, honest answers The Risk Of Childhood Obesity Research Paper.

The second article, Ganle, Boakye & Baatiema, (2019) utilized a cross-sectional quantitative survey which is a methodology that collects information through questionnaires, interviews, as well as focus groups over a period of time. One advantage is that they are relatively cheap and less time-consuming. The disadvantage is that it does not help determine cause and effect.

Results of Studies

The findings of the study by Ganle, Boakye & Baatiema, (2019) established that 46.9% of children were overweight while 21.2% were obese. Also, obesity was more prevalent in private schools than public schools and among girls than boys. Some of the factors established by the article to cayuse obesity include the consumption of fizzy drinks, as well as having a father with higher education. Some of the factors that reduced the incidences of obesity include regular exercises and having adequate sleep for at least 8 hours a day. The results by Korn et al., (2018) established that Whole-of-community interventions were essential in preventing childhood obesity. further, the study established that emphasizing on stakeholders’ social network structures, knowledge, and engagement, may lead to sustained success. Ethical Considerations

The first ethical consideration is informed consent. Before initiating any study involving human subjects, the subjects must be informed of the study while pointing out the possible risks and outcomes associated with the research. The study subjects must understand the terms of the research before they consent to their involvement. The researcher must ensure that the aspect of understanding among the subjects has been extensively addressed. The Risk Of Childhood Obesity Research Paper

Another ethical consideration is the principle of beneficence. The studies that are to be carried out must prove beyond reasonable doubt that they are aimed at issues of public interest. There is an increase in childhood obesity and this has negative impacts to the lives of those affected. The studies hence are aimed at a subject of public interest and the good of the community.

Conclusion

The healthcare issue identified is childhood obesity which is more prevalent among school going children. The policy proposal therefore is to address the issue of obesity among school going children. Some pf the most appropriate approaches to avert this issue is by adopting a healthy diet as well as introducing physical exercises in the school curriculum.
