Health Promotion In Health Care Essay Assignment

Compare and contrast the three different levels of health promotion (primary, secondary, tertiary). Discuss how the levels of prevention help determine educational needs for a patient.

Health promotion which refers to the process that allows people to have more control over their lives and to improve their health is categorized into three levels namely primary secondary, and tertiary. These levels of prevention cover a wide range of interventions with the goal of lowering health risks or threats. Primary prevention aims to stop illness or harm before it starts. It accomplishes this by preventing exposures to hazards that cause disease or injury, changing unhealthy or unsafe behaviors that can lead to disease or injury, and increasing resistance to disease or injury should an exposure occur (Kisling & Das, 2022)Health Promotion In Health Care Essay Assignment. Examples include immunization against infectious diseases and formulation and reinforcement of laws that ban tobacco use.

On the contrary, secondary prevention seeks to lessen the effects of a disease or injury that has already occurred (Kisling & Das, 2022). This is accomplished by identifying and treating disease or injury as soon as possible in order to stop or slow its progression, encouraging individuals to develop personal defenses against further harm or recurrence, and putting policies in place to restore individuals to their prior levels of health.

Further, the tertiary prevention goal is to lessen the effects of an ongoing injury or illness that has long-lasting consequences. It accomplishes this by assisting people in managing long-term, frequently complex health issues and injuries like chronic diseases and lifelong impairments, with the aim of increasing the ability to function, the quality of life, and life expectancy (Kisling & Das, 2022)Health Promotion In Health Care Essay Assignment. These levels of prevention help the care provider determine the appropriate educational intervention for a patient hence maximizing the gains from preventive practice. For instance, at the primary level, people in the community can be educated on the consumption of a balanced diet in order to avoid developing diseases in the future. At the secondary level, women who have a history of breast cancer in their family can be advised to do cancer screening tests to establish the presence or absence of cancer cells in their bodies. At the tertiary level, those who are diagnosed with diabetes or hypertension can be educated on regulating their food intake and engaging in physical activities in order to prevent the exacerbation of symptoms.
