I had the opportunity to interview an ER Nurse by the name Kiara Sweat, who works in our healthcare organization. She is responsible triage and stabilizing patients. She mentioned that the issue is the emergency room has to hold all medical, telemetry, stepdown and ICU admits in the ER so that the staff nurses on these floors are not overworked. This in turn causes the ER to have a 9-hour wait to be seen and no beds for new patients. She stated that overcrowding and long waiting times in the ER has been a great impact on her ability to complete her duties because while they are holding so many admissions in the ER, they still have to see other new patients coming in and have to triage them and see them in the hallway. She also pointed out that the healthcare organization’s leadership has made an effort to address these issues by calling in the supervisors to the different floors to come in and take over the care of the patients that they have in holding for them.
