The patient should be asked for certain specific pieces of information to help with diagnosis and treatment, including, her oncologist, the duration of her unresponsiveness, what prescription drugs she is taking at the moment, the presence of cancer in the family, any last requests in the case of her death, whether she has ever made a living will or other kinds of advanced directive. In case there were no advance directives, I would do cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the client until the boyfriend requests me to stop or till it becomes clear that further attempts would not save her life. Likewise, I would make sure the client’s boyfriend is briefed on the treatment plan and provide his approval before proceeding with anything. If he determines that no resuscitation is necessary, I would make sure to honor that choice.
Applying Ethical Considerations
According to Croxon et al. (2017), end-of-life care is challenging for everyone involved, including loved ones and medical staff. For this scenario, I would call on the support of family members and have them present throughout CPR. In addition, I would make certain that the client’s boyfriend is offered the opportunity to express his preferences and participate in the decision-making process on the client’s behalf.
