As we are learning this week, one of the most vocal instigators of this paranoia was Senator Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy delivered a speech about the imminent threat of communism on February 9, 1950. Perform a search on the internet and locate and read Joseph McCarthy’s speech given in Wheeling, West Virginia on February 9, 1950. McCarthyism is a political campaign that was done publicizing accusations of disloyalty using dismal evidence to oppose the communist government in the United States and other government institutions within the country (Dryja). The practice involves the use of methods of accusations and investigation that are regarded as unfair to facilitate a given agenda. McCarthyism was carried out in the United States between 1950 to 1954 by Senator Joseph McCarthy. Senator Joseph McCarthy conducted various investigations to expose the extent of the communist’s infiltration into the government in a bid to oppose the communist government. The senator alleged that communist spies had infiltrated universities, the film industry, the federal government and other critical areas within the United States. In his speech on February 9, 1949, Senator McCarthy defined a communist nation as one full of immorality which can kill humankind significantly more than it can harm the economy of a country or even a political system. McCarthy gave an example of the Marxian idea of confiscating land and factories as detrimental to the democracy of a company and immoral at the same time. He noted that morality enables people to coexist with one another in peace and harmony with regard on other people’s privacy and properties. Further, immorality can cause wars within and against states if not prevented.
Further, Senator McCarthy defined a communist nation as one full of traitors and atheists aimed at destroying a nation. He as well gave an example of communist Marx and his utterances that contravened Christianity and respect for God. For instance, he quoted Marx saying that there is no person or that believes in Christianity or a God that can match with the communist state. Further, McCarthy alleged that communist nations did not have respect for democracy and quoted Joseph Stalin sentiments two years after the war where he claimed that communistic revolution could not be practiced peacefully under the Christian democracy. Senator Joseph McCarthy stated that the communist nations were a great danger to its people. For instance, he alleged the intention of the Soviet Union to denote an atomic device as well as china’s move to join the communism. The foreign disasters initiated by the communists within the American government led to tension and anxiety among the people. Further, McCarthy alleged that the department of state in America was aware of the dealings by the communist further tainting the image and reputation of the government towards the people. Despite making significant and several claims, McCarthy did not provide adequate and reasonable evidence to support his claims. However, there are some prominent leaders and the American population in general was in support of the McCarthy’s claims including people like Congressman Richard Nixon and Senator Robert Taft. McCarthy’s claims significantly posed a great threat to many lives and spread fear among the American population. As a result of his unsupported and false claims McCarthy was censured by his colleague senators.

Anticommunism was a political formation that was anti communism headed by Senator Joseph McCarthy. Anti-communism sentiments were tough and strong allegations on the evils orchestrated by the communists and their bid to introduce evil supremacy and take over the world. The sentiments by anti- communists were false allegations aimed at tainting the image and reputation of the Soviet Union and make the people have a genitive feeling about communism. For instance, Senator McCarthy alleged that there was repression of the economy and politics under the communist rule. In fact, some of these rights were not recognized by the capitalism. The communists further facilitated and fostered the right to fair treatment while giving equal access to employment and education to all. The anti-communists made people to believe that there was need to safeguard national security by insinuating that there was a state of emergency. By using lies, McCarthy spread fears and creating tension among the people in a bid to gain themselves political powers.

An event similar to the Red scare that has happened in history is the terrorist attack on US soil in September 2001 and this led to the discrimination of Muslims by the whole country and the government (Garfin et al., 2018). After the attack, people affiliated to the Muslim religion were questioned including employees and students. The people wearing the Muslim attire and in gatherings were viewed as terrorists and this caused a scare thereby making religion a sinister rather than an interesting and unending love for the God. Since then, hate crimes associated with Islam has increased causing the hate for Islam. Many people from the Islam religion have since then devoted their time proving their innocence in regards to terrorist attacks.

During the Fifth Amendment, the American government called for a hearing with McCarthy and others not all the people agreed to testify. According to the Fifth Amendment, individuals should not be made to confess through extortion. An individual should not be questioned for an infamous crime without any presentment of a grand jury.
