The interview was conducted with a mutual friend who is a known type II diabetic and hypertensive. His name is Armstrong Louis and he is African American by ethnicity. He is 32 years old and teaches at a high school within the same community that I come from. During the four years that he has had the condition from diagnosis, he has had quite a wealth of experience dealing with healthcare personnel from physicians, nurses, nurse assistants, and pharmacists among others. Apart from being an inpatient on some occasions, he has always also been an outpatient being seen for review and measurement of his body mass index (BMI) and HbA1c (Hammer & McPhee, 2018). I therefore found him suitable for this interview on the influence of patient education on patients and their outcomes. The interview was conducted in an informal setting on the porch of his house in the neighborhood.

  1. Has a patient education representative ever given you instructions on how to care for yourself with your chronic illness?

When I asked him the above question, he stated categorically that indeed he has almost on every occasion been given instructions on how to care for himself and his condition while at home. He said that this has happened both with the physicians that have treated him and the family nurse practitioners as well. In particular, he remembered the period in early 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic ravaged the country. He said that the FNP who was seeing him at the time strongly advised him to get vaccinated by the vaccine which was at that time still sort of experimental (Verger & Dubé, 2020). He had been one of the fiercest vaccine sceptics (A. Louis, personal communication, December 01, 2022).

  1. Has a nurse, physician, pharmacist, or counselor ever advised you on your diet, need for exercise, or medication side effects?

On this question, he agreed too that he has on numerous occasions been advised on the proper diet and also exercise as the first line of management for his type II diabetes. He stated that the nurses, physicians, and dieticians did that and are still doing that to date. Since exercise and diet are still major components of his therapy as well as some medications, he says that this health education is still being given to him every time he goes for review and follow up. He says this is quite regular since Obamacare has enabled him to be covered for the condition (Kominski et al., 2017). At all times, he also admitted that the pharmacists and the nurses have always also educated him on the actions of medications given to him as well as their side effects (A. Asked about this question he smiled and nodded while looking at his spouse who was seated a few meters from us. He stated that his spouse has been very helpful and is the one who has been making sure that he eats right, exercises as required, and takes his medications as prescribed.   1. Are you aware of any assistance services such as for transportation, food, or medication that would be helpful in assisting you as you stay at home while getting older and more dependent?

To this question he seemed lost and instead asked me if I knew of any such assistance services. He however expressed hope that he would still be with his spouse who would still be acting as his helper (A.
