| Describe the Population Health concern you selected. | Globally, there has been an increase in mental health related issues and this has contributed the general decline in the quality of life among people living with mental health issues. According to the center for disease control and prevention, at least 1 in 5 Americans will experience a mental health illness in their lives and at least 1 in 5 children have or will have a serious mental health issue in their lives. Mental health is a critical topic in healthcare because mental health issues such as depression can increase the risk for chronic illnesses such as diabetes or stroke. However, despite the worrying figures on mental health related issues, there are no appropriate measures that have been established in healthcare facilities to facilitate screening for mental health conditions to ensure timely and early medical attention.

The legislative agency that will help me address mental health issue is the Substance Abuse and Mental health Services Administration which is a government agency with the mandate of alleviating the impacts of mental illnesses and substance abuse. Further, the body publishes information on serious mental health services to ensure that the information is readily available to the public.

| How do you think your selected healthcare issue might get on the presidential agenda? How does it stay there? | One approach of ensuring that my healthcare issue gets to the presidential agenda is the use of the media to create awareness and also facilitate widespread attention of the issue to the extent of reaching the president. I chose Chris Miller as my champion for mental health because of his role in advocacy on matters mental health. Chris Miller is a long time educator that some of his students were struggling with mental health issues and decided to take the role of advocacy on mental health. In addition, Chris Miller has a use social media following and this will provide an appropriate platform to communicate the agenda. |

As a nurse, how often have you thought to yourself, If I had anything to do about it, things would work a little differently? Increasingly, nurses are beginning to realize that they do, in fact, have a role and a voice.
