Consider the PHRs of today. Patient-accessible health records are currently web-based and have seen little consumer use when compared to the total U.S. population. The VA has had notable success with its veterans logging on; however, other web-based portals have struggled. GoogleHealth, a free PHR site, shut its services down effective January of 2012 citing too few and inconsistent users to maintain the site.Personal Health Records Essay Assignment Papers.

NURS 8210 Week 9 Discussion SAMPLE
For this discussion I chose to appraise my personal health portal, a secure online health management tool of a large teaching institution. This portal connects patient to portions of their medical record, such as immunization records, appointments, and lab result. During regular business hours, the portal also allows direct communication with the office of the primary care physician, as well as, specialty physicians when the patient is under their care.Personal Health Records Essay Assignment Papers.

Appraisal

Overall, I appreciate the quality of my health care providers electronic personal health records (ePHR) system. I can easily find the information I am looking for and easily print the documents I need. It is also very simple to contact the provider, as the provider(s) of record are available for selection and then all you need to do is type out the message. I have always had a response within 24 hours, even if simply to “state they are working on my concern”. Wagner et al. categorized three themes that were suggested by patients during a qualitative study on the ePHR (2010).Personal Health Records Essay Assignment Papers. The first theme was User Theme, such as terminology, usability, patient familiarity and patient expectations. I believe all components of the user theme have been met, likely because as a nurse I am comfortable with navigating the electronic medical records. The second theme of Wagner et al’s. study was System Acceptance, such as advantages, disadvantages and cost (2010). I greatly appreciate the ability to track my lab work, and track the data overtime. I’m sure there is no individual cost to me, however it is likely that the hospital is recouping cost from consumers in other methods. The final theme of Wagner et al. was of technology, which were ranked by the study participants on importance and feasibility, such as navigation, diary functionality, contacts, and medications (2010). In my ePHR the technology meets my needs, however I can imagine the complexity that could occur with someone who has multiple disease processes.Personal Health Records Essay Assignment Papers.

NURS 8210 Week 9: Personal Health Records
“By computerizing health records, we can avoid dangerous medical mistakes, reduce costs and improve care.” —President George W. Bush at his State of the Union Address on January 20th, 2004 (as cited in MSNBC, 2005).Personal Health Records Essay Assignment Papers.

“Our recovery plan will invest in electronic health records and new technology that will reduce errors, bring down costs, ensure privacy, and save lives.” —President Barack Obama during his address to a Joint Session of Congress on February 24th, 2009 (as cited in Miller Center, 2011).Personal Health Records Essay Assignment Papers.

At the core of any health information system are patient data. These data can take many forms, from a medical diagnosis to a therapeutic regime, and from a laboratory result to a personal food diary. Through electronic record keeping, health care providers and organizations are able to collect, organize, and analyze patient data to support and improve clinical decision making and to deliver more timely and effective care. Patients, too, are benefiting from greater access to their personal health data, taking a more active role in their health care decisions.Personal Health Records Essay Assignment Papers.

This week, you consider the benefits of electronic health records and personal health records (PHR).
